Rainbow Died

Day 36: Rainbow Died…

We talk about death in our house. A lot. Because it seems to come up when you have a 5 year old. Here are just a few questions I’ve gotten lately:

· Mama—do you know what I found yesterday? A leaf skeleton. Did you know that leaves die too? And they have skeletons?

· Mama—when will our bunny die?

· Mama---when will we die?

· Mama—how did Rainbow the fish get dead?

Kids are incredibly able to navigate these conversations if the adult involved can manage their own discomfort. Kids can also hold that things are inexplicable, might not have an answer, might not have a why, and might hold mystery. It’s ok to not know as an adult, and to model that for little ones.

Welcome to my second, 100-day project. I hope to provide a daily offering on something grief-related. I am a grief therapist and educator working with people in Oregon, Washington, DC, Maryland, and Maine. This feed is in honor of each person who has trusted me with their stories and wisdom during their grief journey. I hope that others may benefit from simple and straightforward talk about a topic that can be difficult.
